Racing
The first Sunday in every month is race day. The Sailing Secretary is responsible for setting the races and encouraging club members to take part. Generally we will have a short race outside the club starting at about 11.00 in the morning followed by a longer race thereafter around some of the local islands. We get 7 to 15 boats on the water for a race day of light hearted ‘competition’. After the racing we would all settle down to a barbeque which gives an opportunity for us to dissect the outcome of the races and blame each other for our own failures!
If you want to take part in a race there are a couple of Club boats that can be rented otherwise talk to a member about joining as a crew for the day.
The first Sunday of the month is a good time to visit if you are interested in joining as there are generally more members present to talk to.
Sponsored Races
The Ghana Sailing Club has 4 sponsored races a year. Before, Chirstmas, Easter and the Summer. Each race has a title sponsor, the Pre-Christmas race is supported by CFAO and are all supported by CLUB Lager, if you are interested in sponsoring one of these races please let us know. These are 1 day regattas of 2 races followed by a communal BBQ and Drinks.
The premier event of the Year is the annual AJ Accad Cup toSogakope the race takes place in October and sponsored by Nissan Autoparts, through their Mercury Outboard Motor Brand. This is a two day race that takes the fleet up river to Sogokope on Saturday. We stay overnight in Sogokope in a local hotel (including a great party!!) and have a second race back on Sunday. Nissan Autoparts then host the sailors to a fantastic Sunday lunch and prize giving at Subhi's Island at the mouth of the estuary. Thank you Mercury!
